So, what would you consider your all-time top 5 favorite tunes to play in the Clawhammer style?  Mine are as follows and tend to change on a weekly basis:

1.  Arkansas Traveller

2. Forky Deer

3.  Soldier's Joy

4.  Polly Put Your Kettle On

5.  Christmas Holiday

Nice list there greasy-----or should I say, "slick" list.  Ha!  My current repertoire includes:

1)  Mole in the Ground

2)  Sally in the Garden

3)  Quince Dillon's High D Tune

4)  Jay Bird

5)  Plank Road

I'm currently on a big Dbl. C tuning kick and going to town.

currently i do a lot of:
fortune (in double d capoed 2)
mississippi sawyer (in classic c capoed 2)
wreck of the old '97 (in g)
white house blues (in g)
old rattler (in g)

the last three i got started on after getting "the how and the tao of old time banjo" by patrick costello. can be ordered from funkyseagull.com. (no connection, just a happy customer).

(old standbys i still work hard on include "may the circle be unbroken", "grandfathers clock", "little sadie", "froggy went a-courtin' death", and "wildwood flower".)

:thumbs2: keep on pickin'

My list is a reflection of the instructional materials I have been using. All are in two-C tuning as I have an old banjo that doesn't take kindly to retuning.

1. Who's Goin' Down To Town
2. Johnson Boys
3. Old Molly Hare
4. Liberty
5. Soldier's Joy

joe-
are you sure it's the banjo, and not just an old set of strings? retuning shouldn't be too difficult on most banjos, unless you are using real friction tuners, then you may be needing to look into nylon strings. friction pegs can be a real pain once they start to wear.

:bluelight: of course, you could always use this as an excuse to acquire another banjo

"but, honey, i need to have one for g tuning! ... and c tuning ... and mountain minor tuning ... and ...!" :smack:

Banjo Brad-----its from the wonderful Dwight Diller website.  He's got some really nice tunes to choose from.  Heres the link to the one I've been messing around with:

http://dwightdiller.com/tab/quincedillon.html

Enjoy!

This banjo is from around 1900 and does have friction tuners. When I retune one string, they all change a bit so I tend to be lazy and not retune. I don't know anything about the merits of nylon strings.

BTW, the banjo acquisition strategy sounds very promising...

Joe

joe-
the nice thing about nylon, or gut strings, is that they are usually lower tension. easier on the pegs. if you have a banjo-knowledgable music store anywhere near, it might be worthwhile talking to somebody there. or at a jam group, or check out some other web sites, like banjo-l, mudcat cafe, or frets.com. most of the places have lots of knowledgable people who can give all sorts of opinions on anything :D

when i retune, i always have to check the whole tuning, even on my goodtime - i think it is the nature of the beast. also whenever i capo, i need to fine-tune again. you get used to it.

good luck.

Well, I am new to the banjo. These choices represent what I am learning, thus consumed by (all are in gDGBD):

Cluck Old Hen
Liza Jane
Poor Ellen Smith
Sugar in the Coffee
Sally Ann

Not sure if I spelled them correctly, but these are the tunes I am working on. ;)

Windhorse... welcome to ezFolk! I noticed that you're a graduate student at UF. What are you studying. One of my sons a graduate student there too. He's working on a Ph.D. in forensic anthropology.

Is there much old-time music around Gainesville -- clawhammer banjo, fiddle, and that type of stuff?

:hat:

Well, I was accepted as a graduate student with the Philosophy department. However, over the course of the year, I discovered that it wasn't the right route for me. So, next year, I will be attending Florida State University's Social Work program, focusing on counseling and the older person. Several years back, I was accepted into several graduate anthropology programs -- I think your son made an interesting and intelligent selection.

There is an oldtime community in Gainesville. Actually, northern Florida has a rich oldtime community. I have attended several jam sessions (though this was before I played) and completely enjoyed them; the people are good folks. Their style of playing is primarily melodic clawhammer. I think K. Perlman has a following here, and actually hosts an annual contest (I think).

Good luck on the education... and if you find out that there's a big folk music event of some type try to remember to post it on here. I might try to make it down that way. We try to come down at least a couple times a year, or more if we can find a good excuse. The Cabot Lodge in Gainesville is my favorite place in the world to stay.

I love the song "Polly Put the Kettle On" but have no idea how to play it. Does anyone out there have the tabs for it? The reason I ask is because I saw it on some lists! thanks!
