i was browsing through the clawhammer banjo section of this site, and noticed that the recommended videos and CDs were missing what i consider to be 2 very worthwhile additions.

in the video section, i would highly recommend the tape "Pete Seeger: How to Play the 5-String Banjo" on Homespun Tapes. It is worth the money just to hear Pete and Doc Watson do a song at the end, but it also demonstrates many of the styles that Pete uses. While not complete as an instruction video, it is worthwhile to see Pete play.

i would add the CD: "High Atmosphere" Rounder CD 0028. to crib the liner notes: High Atmosphere celebrates the particular riches of the Appalachian tradition. ...this album is essential material for any Old-time music library ...

ok- sorry, but I ran out of room on the last post.

I feel that these 2 items are a necessary part of any banjo player's collection.

Hey Brad,

I left the Pete Seeger tape off for a couple of reasons. One is that clawhammer is not his main style of playing so I thought it could be confusing to recommend it. Does he do much clawhammer on the tape (I haven't seen it)?

The other reason is the reviews it got. Ouch! Take a look and see what you think...

Those reviews are from Amazon, so after you read the reviews head over to Amazon and write something nice!

:salute:

Brad... that High Atmosphere CD looks good. I added it to the recommended clawhammer CDs on the main clawhammer page.

Thanks!

:hat:

As far as instructional videos go, the ones that I used and thought were outstanding were the David Holt Technique and Repertoire videos.  There are 2 volumes, one building on the other.  The only other one I have seen is the Frank Lee "Old Time Banjo" video.  It was good, but I liked the Holt ones much better.

Richard-
Yeah, maybe you're right. Since I had a lot of guitar playing background, and can read music & tab, it wasn't that hard for me to get into. I really like what Pete does with his music, and really bought the tape based on that. I agree, his clawhammer style is really not very predominant (I think he uses it more as back-up), but the up-picking is basically clawhammer. I still think, just for historical purposes, it is a must-have tape, just like his book, which is much along the same lines, but very interesting.

I'll have to get over to Amazon and say something nice.

Unc-

I used the Bob Carlin tapes for my real introduction to clawhammer. But these tapes came later, after a lot of work with Richard's stuff, and really just helped me learn some tunings and songs. Still, they are good tapes too. Someday I may check out the Holt tapes, I see them in BNL alot.
