So, I was over at a friend's place demonstrating the clawhammer technique and playing some tunes. She liked my picking so much, it inspired her to want to learn to play clawhammer banjo. What banjo would you guys recommend for someone who is wanting to start from scratch and strictly play the clawhammer style? My first instinct was for her to get a Deering - Goodtime Open Back, do you guys concur or know of a better option? Thanks!

If she's wanting to keep it inexpensive the Goodtime is a good choice, but if you have a chance to compare at a local store take a look also at the Gold Tone Cripple Creek (CC-100). I've compared them both the I'd choose the Cripple Creek over the Goodtime if they were the same price, but I think the Cripple Creek is $50 or so cheaper most of the time. They're both fine for learning. Both play great and sound pretty good. The CC-100 has a more traditional look, which I prefer (but that's just my opinion). Seems like you can see one of those Goodtimes a mile away if you know what I mean. A couple other things about the CC-100 I like better: it has an armrest, which the Goodtime does not. That can be a killer for some people (like myself). Also the CC-100 has a rosewood fingerboard which is way more standard than the Goodtime's solid piece of maple with frets cut into it. They both have guitar style tuners that work fine and geared 5th string pegs, and both are nice entry-level banjos, but I'd give the nod to the Cripple Creek from what I've seen. That's just my opinion... I could be wrong.

Thanks Richard, my brother has a Gold Tone White Lady and likes it very much. I hadn't had much experience with their cheaper banjos. Looks like a nice 5' Any other opinions?

You are quite the salesman, Richard! She purchased a Gold Tone - Cripple Creek from Folk of the Wood. Unfortunately, the saleman called her and told her it was on a week and a half backorder...he offered her a Deering but she turned it down! Ironic! :jester:

Hey that's great... I'm sure she'll like it. The Goodtime would have been a good choice too... they're both nice banjos for somebody starting out, and either one will serve as a great backup banjo for years if she upgrades to something else later on. I appreciate the compliment about me being a good salesman. Well, I try, but sometimes I might forget to cross a "t" or dot an "i"... and then there are those times I leave out something major like a link to where a person could buy the banjo from me... http://www.ezfolk.com/instruments/banjo/Gold_Tone/gold_tone.html Maybe she'll keep me in mind this Christmas when she upgrades to one of those $7000 Gibsons!
