I think it is time to buy a tuner. There are a MILLION of those things! What do you guys use or recommend for a beginner? Harry in Bakersfield

I'd recommend one of the small clip on tuners. They clip onto your headstock and pick up through the vibration of your uke. If others keep playing or noodling, it won't effect your tuning.![]()

That tuning site is a neat thing. I've bookmarked against the time I can't find a tuner. I have three electronic tuners and prefer the cheapest one. That one is about the size of a deck of cards. It was a built-in stand so you can put is on a table and see it. The stand folds back to clip into the sound of a round-hole guitar. For about $15, I love it. I picked it out of the Southern Strings catalog. I have an Intellituner as well. Similar to the model pictured about but with customizable features.I never needed the extra features. For about $50, it's not very responsive. It can work in a room filled with ambient musicians. Also have the cheaper Boss tuner. It's pretty good and I've used the built-in metronome. It's smaller than the cheapie above. I used to have the bigger Boss unit. But it needed to be plugged into an electric instrument or a mic. Very responsive. Handy for a working musician (who is amp'ed). But at about $90, it's a bit big and requires too much effort for an acoustic musician. A lot of people had the diamond-shaped one (Jim's recommendation) it is inexpensive, unobtrusive and accurate. Guy in my orchestra (fine musician, deaf as a post) has a bunch of them. Leave one attached to each of his instruments. His logic is simple: if you invest a few hundred bucks or more in an instrument, it silly not to spend another twenty to make it sound good all the time. And its also damned convenient. If I needed another tuner, I would get the one Jim mentioned. I use the Intellitouich PT10 Mini Clip On Tuner. I find it very responsive and a blessing when trying to tune over the din of the pub. All the best!
