Thanks, Clyde, for your heartily support.
My email is vincentvunguyen@gmail.com.
I have search our site and was led to some other website to learn basic position to play erhu. I also use Google video search and download some sample video of erhu performance.
I am amazed that how beautiful sound Erhu can play (not like I do now) I wish one day I can play like that. Now I keep practice bowing.

I have a question about bowing. When I bow the open D string from right to left, the pitch is almost 1 tone higher that bowing from left to right. Is it normal when people just start to practice or it is because of the bow? My bow has black hair.

Thank Clyde for your valuable instruction.

I practice many times today, and the sound is better. I also replace the bridge with a piece of chopstick as your instruction in previous post. So my wife and neighbor would not hear it too loud.

The sound I made is a bit more stable than during last week, but I still need a lot more of practice. Perhaps months before I can control the force on the bow and make it sound rounder.

I have another question about how to resin. Should I smear the resin directly on the hair, or the white plastic on the resonate box?

Since the friend who gifted me the Erhu has no idea about music, and I have no experience with the fiddle, I am lack of many basic knowledge. I have made a couple mistake, before I realize it, like I cut off the Qiān jin (千斤) before I read an article on Wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erhu )

I am worried that a few hairs are loosen on my bow. I cut 2 of them off because they are so loose that give me a hard time. I need some advice on how to protect and maintain a good bow.

By the way, I found a couple of websites giving free sample of video instruction, or performance on Erhu, which you can download and play on your PC/iPod/PSP, or burn to a VCD to play on your TV. I hope it could be helpful to other newbie like myself.

After a month of practice, I am happy that I can play some simple songs thanks to the valuable instructions of many people on the Internet, expecially from this forum. My gratitude to all of you.

Next topic I wish to learn is left hand techniques.

I have done some research and surprise to see there are so many techniques that left hand can apply on Erhu (with combination with right hand bowing, of course) such as vibrato, trillo, tremollo, staccato, slur, shift, slide, detache, pizzicato, bow up, bow down, bird chirping, dog braking, horse neighing, etc..., etc....

Could someone please teach or sharing your experience about practice the left hand, especially "vibrato" technique? Let's begin with this basic and important technique, shall we?

Thank you all for your help, and have a good day.

Vvn

Thank you Clyde for your enthusiasm to help novices like myself. I received your email and those instruction are exactly what I am looking for. I think I might select some parts and post here together with my own findings, so other novices can benefit, too. And hope the experienced players will join and share more instructions.

Happy Chinese New Year to you and others!

It is sure that better erhu would have good sound quality even in the high note area, I don't expect that an erhu with a price tag of abt. usd150 would play well when it comes to high notes.

Of course, it has much to do with the playing techniques as well, but to a beginner, what matters more is the erhu itself.

Clyde, I'm new to the Erhu and i'm really loving all the tips you're giving on this forum. Thanks! One thing I didn't notice in your instruction was any info on re-stringing the erhu.

I'm in the process of re-tuning the erhu and I'm having a problem with the strings making two different tones on the push and pull bow motions. Is there something wrong with my technique, or have i done something wrong while re-stringing my erhu?

Help! :D

Does the damper go above or below the bridge.

Thanks Clyde for the helpful info.  When I got my erhu, there was a cotton string that was tied to neck and the D string, the A string was loose.  I thought that the string was just a temporary measure for shipping purposes, now I realise that it is part of the instrument.  The question I have is: Should both strings be tied in the same loop? in which case, the two strings will be touching each other.  Also, what is the correct position of the string along the neck of the erhu?

Hi, you can find in the animation below how to bind the so called "Qian-Jin", this is the best way so far I found and hope it to be helpful to you.

And as to the height of the "Qian-Jin", it depends, some people would like to position it higher while others relatively low.

Hello Mr. Clyde,
I was looking on the internet for some erhu accesories and i came across several differnet kinds of rosin. i was wondering what difference each kind makes on the sound quality.

(the ones i saw were light rosin and dark rosin)
