A person locally was selling what they thought was a Erhu. I didn't know anything about it but bought it after I did some online research and found out that the Erhu was that amazing sounding solo instrument besides the cello (no offense to YoYo Ma) in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

After I bought it, I did some further research and I found out it was a Gaohu. The prior owner was using it as a wall decoration and It was missing the bridge, the bow had no hair, and had no strings. I decided to try to get it in playing condition.

My local music stores don't have horsehair long enough to repair the bow, so I am using a violin bow temporarily as I restore it. I am using electric guitar strings (a 9 and 16).

I just made a bridge from mahogany using pictures I found online and reassembled it last week, and it works!

I am starting to learn to play it.

If anyone could help me with a couple of questions, I would appreciate it.

Could anyone tell me the approximate dimensions of your gaohu bridge? Also what are the gauges of string? I tried to google the info but am having no luck. Also, what is the white thing over the top of the resonator/soundbox made of? From what I have read, it holds rosin and allows the hair to glide over the head without catching the hair and breaking it, but that's about all I could find out.

I just have to say that I love this instrument! I am a guitarist and have never tried using a bowed instrument so this is all new to me, but I am having a great time. I think the neighborhood dogs like it too because I hear them howl!:thumbs1:

I am so glad that I found this forum because I am getting so tired of hearing the reply, "A gow what?" Any help from you would be greatly appreciated!
