I doubt there's any pickup for erhu now that can produce a better tone that the common Vocal Mic.

I use the following pickup sometimes:

The clamp fits on the neck next to the resonator. It does take some getting used to. A mic on a stand is more out-of-the-way. The Silver Bullet fits in my bag easier though. It is plenty good enough for live sound. For recording, a condensor microphone would probably be my choice, rather than a vocal mic.
