I bought an entry level erhu 2 months ago, and I am ready for an upgrade. The higher registers are scratchy, and the volume is not very good. Will it help if I upgrade the strings or the bow? If I decide to buy a new instrument, like a concert grade, where is the best source? Ideally, I would like to try it out before purchasing. I am located in Toronto.

Thanks for the tips. So I should get hold of a selection of bridges and try them out.

Hi Cheang, I recently did a recording of how different types of bridge affects the sound of the Erhu. You have to listen closely to hear the difference. Also, different erhu reacts different to the bridges. But its worth a reference: http://tansungwah.blogspot.com/2007/08/bridges-over-troubled-snakeskin.html Thanks, Sung Wah

I am located in Toronto. There are two places I know that sell Erhu in Toronto...if you like ...check them out...in fact I just bought 4 Erhus from them...one Suzhou Ebony Erhu, two Suzhou Rosewood Erhus, and one Shanghai Roseswood Erhu. They all sound differently! Their addresses are as follows: 1) Harmony Music, Unit D3, 63 Silver Star Blvd., Scarborough Tel. 416-754-2228 ...under $200 up to $1000. They have private rooms that you can try out the Erhu before buying...bring your music sheets with you! 2) MayTune Chinese Music, N23 Heritage Town, Pacific Mall.... Tel. 905-471-1782....this is a small operation...staff is very friendly...not much selection but things can be different at various times...if you are doing some shoppings at Pacific Mall, why not check it out. Both places offer Erhu lessons at a reasonable rate!

My erhu developed a high pitched noise when I play the higher notes on the D string. I can't get rid of it. Do I need new strings? How can you tell when strings need changing.

Maytune did not have any high quality instruments, they sent me to harmony. Harmony had only two instruments priced at $370, and $900. The salesman was not very knowlegeable, he expected me to decide to buy with 5 minutes of testing. Also, once purchased, it cannot be returned if not satisfied. I just was not happy to pay a thousand bucks without a thorough trial. At least if the salesman was knowlegable, he could give me a few pointers and give a reccommendation. I know Eason in Singapore would let you return a Concert grade erhu it if not satisfied, but of course, you have to contend with the postage and taxes and duty etc.

Hi Cheang, Most Erhus are not able to get a good sound on the notes one octave higher than the open D string. You also need to control your bowing on the high inner notes so that the irritating pitched noise do not come out. But the consolation is that not a lot of songs need to play up so high on the inner string. Strings get dull and lose their brightness overtime like what Clyde mention but it should not be the cause of the high pitched noise Yes I like Mudan strings as well. Sung Wah

Personally, I use my own judgment to select when come to buying musical instruements...I rarely listen to anyone's recommendation (except my instructor(s) or experienced players)...the salesman's job is to sell...every erhu has it's own voice and personality...beauty is in the eye of the beholder! It is like finding a wife...I can only have one wife at a time...hahahaha...but erhu does not impose such legal limitation on me...my motto is "I like it ..I buy it"...never be forced into marrying someone you don't like (more so when confronted by a high-pressure tactic salesman) It would be nice if Eason can set up a shop in Canada...it can be costly to correct a mismatch in marriage!

Well, to lessen the possiblity of a mismatch, I usually take videos of high end prospective brides for my customers to understand her better. They can see and hear them in action at the same time!

Clyde, I'm new here. I learnt a lot of things about erhu from your postings. However...I find it very hard to read your postings as they do not have any full stop or comma. Can you put those in the next time you post? Much appreciate it.

Clyde, no need to apologise at all. Where are you from? Aren't you an American? How did you learn to play erhu? are you a professional erhu musician? Here's a photo of my Band.
