Clyde,   how thick ( in inches)   are each of the 6 pieces , sides of the hex box?

I found out that my 2 little Grandchildren have the typical curiosity to want to try my erhu out,    thought I would knock together a simple basic noise maker for them.

I have some "free-wood"  here ,(thats the best kind)  which is 1/2" thickness.  Is that within range of thickness for them to make noise with?
