Hello everybody. My first post on this forum.

I`ve been playing jazz, rock, blues guitar for 20 years now and I thought it about time I stated checking out some other instruments that have always interested me.

My first question is if someone could help me identify some songs. I went to this site http://www.shoppingchinanow.com  and really like the music on the site. I wrote to them to find out what it was and who was playing. I got the name of one tune, the first one which is "Embroidered purse", or something, but they didn`t know who was playing. I`ve been looking around on the net for several hours now but no luck. I found a few recordings of that tune, but none of them sounded like this.

Anyone have any idea?

Thanks

Odd-Arne

Hello Odd-Arne,

I don't recognize the xiao tune, but the others are familiar. I could probably find the names with some digging. I have no idea which CD or CDs these particular recordings are from, or the names of the performers. There are a lot of Cds available with similar arrangements. If you like these tunes, just download them from the ShoppingChinaNow site. If you have trouble with that, I could email them to you, or put them on a website for you to download from.

Best wishes,

David

That would be fantastic. Thankyou. I have absolutely no idea how to do that. My email is: gitargud@gmail.com

I`ve been looking around some more today and I`m just totally confused. There must be some sort of expert somewhere who might have some idea, though.

Go to YouTube and search for "traditional Chinese music." Many of the videos will have the title in Chinese characters, and in the comments section often viewers will be arguing about the best translation of the title.

Also check out The Internet Chinese Music Archive at http://www.iBiblio.ORG/chinese-music/

Thanks. I`ll have a look. It`s the level of ensemble playing and the quality of the recording that really gets me. Like I`ve been with western music with buying music based on who`s playing on an album and it seems really really hard to find out.

Most of my CDs from China have very sketchy notes about the musicians if anything at all. Other than for major performers, I find it more useful to shop by label than by artist or group. The late lamented Hugo label is one of the best. Fortunately Hugo label CDs still seem to be available to the resourceful.

Best wishes,

David
