As a beginner on the Banjo, what style should I learn and which song would be a good one to start with?

OK, this is a tough question to answer with the limited information you gave. First, what music do you enjoy? Bluegrass, Old Time, Jazz, Popular, what? Listen to some of the artists here or listen to some on-line radio streams (for old-time, try Sugar In The Gourd or others). Second, what type banjo do you have? 5-string, 4-string? These are played, in most part, with completely different methods - a 4-string is usually played with a flatpick (or plectrum) in a jazzy, New Orleans style that I'm sure you're familiar with. A 5-string is normally played with a thumb pick and 2 fingerpicks (Blue Grass, or "Scruggs" style), or with bare fingers for "classical" banjo, or with the back of the index or middle finger and thumb for minstrel (stroke style) or Clawhammer (Old Time) styles. It can also be played with or without picks in an up-stroke (finger-style guitar) style in 2- and/or 3-finger styles like Will Keys and other old time players. Then there is a basic strumming style that can be used as accompaniment for singing folk songs, and many more. Basically, you need to decide what style you are most interested in learning to start with. Concentrate on it until you have a fairly good handle on it, then if you desire, you can branch out into attempting other styles. Me, I'm dedicated to Old Time Clawhammer and some 2-finger OT tunes.

But, don't let any of it scare you off! Banjo is way too much fun to not play it! For a good introduction to old time clawhammer style, check out the materials available here on ezFolk and at http://www.rocketsciencebanjo.com
