I was most delighted to see (and hear this tune) here at ezFolk - this song (along with 'Folsom Prison Blues', come to think of it!) was the first tune I ever learned to play properly on the guitar! I still play it now. I first heard the Woody Guthrie version on an LP my folks owned, and on an LP by The Seekers(!!) which I got from an (elder) relative!

Great to hear it any time really!

Dan :)

PS the words (in Richard Hefner's version) are a little different to the versions I've heard before - is this a 'traditional' song with variations?

Hey Dan,

A few years ago through the Internet I met a lady who is the daughter of Fred Lewey and she said she had never heard Wreck of the Old 97 with the original lyrics that her father had written, so I told her I would record it that way, which I did. You can read about it on the following page, which includes text from a newspaper article from way back...

The origin of the song has been debated a lot over the years and I'm not sure about anything, but it was an interesting story and she was a nice lady so I did the song.

If anybody wants to hear it you can find it on my bluegrass page...

It is also done as "Casey Jones," and I have heard versions of "John Henry" that have a lot of similarity - the folk process lives on!

"Wreck of the Old '97" was also used as the tune for the Kingston Trio's song, "M.T.A."

I love the idea of Fred Lewey being called into a courtroom and singing his tune in a 'high irish tenor'. :)

Excellent info - cheers!

Dan :)

I have a Duane Eddy song book...yep Twangy Duane himslf. One of the songs is The Wreck of the Old 97. It is straight bluegrass guitar as written. He played it on a hollow body electric. I remember his instructions "play near the bridge to get a twangy song."  So much for music-tech.
