In trying to list my new CD with CD Baby and garageband.com, I have been faced with the question - Who do you sound like? The fact of the matter is that I don't have a clue. If anyone is willing to listen to the first four songs on my EZFolk page and give me some idea of artists that I might sound like, I would appreciate it. The songs can be found at:

http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/919/audio.php

Some of my influences are Grateful Dead, The Band, and CSN, but I don't feel as if I sound like any of those. I am really stumped.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Well, I like your sound, very much. But, I also cannot put a name to someone similar. There are occaisonal cuts on cds by people considered "alt-county" and "contemporary-folk" that seem similar, but the overall sound of those people does not really make a good comparison. Same with your influences of CCR, Dead, and Band. I see what you mean, but your sound is softer and more intimate than anything I've heard from them or their constituents.

So, no help on your question, but I like what you are doing.

Thanks for the comments, Erich and for the encouragement.

This really has been an eye-opening experience. I understand their question and can see how it could steer people my way, but I really don't know who to compare it to. I do feel there is some similarity to the Grateful Dead, especially in their early days, but the "jam" factor isn't there. I should be happy that I am unique, but it doesn't help my marketing. :talk:

Gary-

I'd try saying you sound like enter your/yourband name here.

I know it doesn't sound like the thing to do, but that uniqueness in itself might draw listeners.

Soapbox mode on:

I'm thinking the same thing.  Why on earth do we need to sound like anyone else?  Why can't Fred Bradbury just sound like Fred Bradbury, Erich Schroeder like Erich Schroeder, Gary Blanchard like Gary Blanchard, and Jim Edwards like Jim Edwards?    Besides, if you gather up a dozen listeners and ask them who you sound the most like, you'll probably get a dozen different answers.

In my opinion, it's our uniqueness that defines us as musicians, not our similarities.

It sounds to me like even CD Baby may be catching a bit of Nashville-itis.  :?

Soapbox mode off:

Gary, those were some GREAT tracks!

Well, kinda. But as a happy Emusic  user, I have often followed the  "similar artist" links and  been happy with  the  results.  Often not  happy, too. But it's an interesting way of browsing. Maybe we're just being too litteral. Maybe you should browse around on CDbaby and look for artists that are kinda like what you do, and don't worry about well-known artist sound-likes at all.

Nice feedback, and I'm with you guys, but I see the "sounds like" functioning as search terms to drive people to the CD. I will browse CD Baby to see who might sound similar.

I have long felt that genre designations are artificial and subjective, and have debated this issue more than once. As much as I hate labels, however, they are a reality that we have to deal with. Someone suggested that my genre is "neo-hippy." I reminded them that I was actually one of the original tribe. :talk:

And, again, thanks to all for your kind words. This CD is a different direction for me, yet is, in a way, a return to my roots. I'm glad you liked the result.

I'm with you guys.  You sound like You, but to put a tag on it, Gary sounds a little like "Tom T. Hall" who did all the trucker and "my daddy died" ballads.

I gave a copy of my CD to the owner of my nearby eating place, Girly's Grill, since Lori is a fellow Dead Head. She basically says the same thing.

Good News - I actually have my own sound

Bad News - People want you to sound like someone else :talk:

Well, I'm not so sure that people WANT you to sound like someone else, but they EXPECT you to sound like someone else. :?

I've been trying to sound like Gary Blanchard for years but could never find a CD to emulate.

How are you, Gary?

I'm fine, thanks. My "Worlds of Wonder" CD is now available on CDFreedom.

http://www.cdfreedom.com/artists/garyblanchard/

It should also soon be available through itunes and some other digital sources. Even more exciting to me is the fact that I have written five or six new songs, have reworked one or two of my older tunes, and have worked out (forgive me, Banjo Brad) an electric version of "Cripple Creek."

By the way, zfk55, do I know you from somewhere else? Your handle isn't familiar. If not, it is great to meet you.

You sound like Phil Ochs, especially from his best album Pleasures of the Harbor. except your voice doesn't crack. Good stuff. Good paradiegm.

I still have a group of Ochs' 33 1/3rpm records out in the studio.  I haven't played them for years, but after today's session I'm going to play a few. Thanks for the reminder. Those were indeed the days.

Thanks again to all who have contributed. I realize that my voice is rather "not rock" and my musical style is perhaps closest to the early San Francisco sound of 1966-1967. I like the fact that I can't be pigeonholed easily.

I am getting ready to post the first two cuts for the follow-up to Worlds of Wonder. The CD is named for the title song, Hope Will Grow. The other cut is a love song for my sweet wife, Carol; it is titled You Sent YOur Love to Rescue Me. Hope you like them. :)
