Me and Tim and Cmac started working on "Man Of Constant Sorrow" today. What an awesome tune. All country hillbilly sounding to keep Cmac happy...but nice and rotten dark stuff just like I love:cool:

I looked it up, and it was writtian in 1913, then re-done by Dillon in 1962, and then rearrainged for the move "Oh Brother, Where art thou?".

My question is, if we play the movie arraingmet, is it still public domain, so that we could post it here? Thanks!

Absolutely... it's public domain and you can do it anyway you want to. I think in the "O Brother" movie there were 3 or 4 completely different arrangements of Man of Constant Sorrow. My own recording (HiFi - LoFi) is similar to one of those. Go for it!

Tim and C-Mac,  will sure be looking for your rendishion of the song,  I know you guys will do it justise,    That is one of my favrite and all the songs that they had on the movie I liked. :dude:

Richard did a fine job doing it also.   If I ever get my computer to where I can record I would like to try it or ( going down to the river to pray ).  Does any one know if it is of public domain or not.  If any one remembers all the songs they did on the movie and can say what they are and if they can be recorded, please do.

Keep them strings a buzzing.

Charlie

Is it time for another co-op song?...Hey Fumblefingers, the guys have the CD at work, if any of the other songs from the movie are as good as this one, I'm with ya, and wanna know more about them.

Track listing of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

1. Po Lazarus - chain gang work song - pd (arrang. Alan Lomax)
2. Big Rock Candy Mountain - Harry McClintock, words & music
3. You Are My Sunshine -Written by Jimmie Davis & Charles Mitchell
4. Down To The River To Pray - Traditional (Down To the Valley To Pray, the words were changed to fit the scene in the movie)
5. I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow - traditional - arranged by Carter Stanley
6. Hard Time Killing Floor Blues - written by Nehemiah "Skip" James
7. Man Of Constant Sorrow
8. Keep on the Sunny Side - written by A.P. Carter
9. I'll Fly Away - written by Albert E. Brumley
10. Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby - Arrangement by Alan Lomax, Mrs. Sidney Carter, Gillian Welch, and T. Bone Burnett
11.In The Highways - Written by Maybelle Carter
12. I Am Weary (Let Me Rest) - written by Pete Roberts
13. Man of Constant Sorrow - Arranged by Ed Haley
14. O Death - Traditional
15. In The Jailhouse Now - written by Jimmie Rodgers
16. Man of Constant Sorrow - Arranged by Carter Stanley
17. Indian War Whoop - written by Hoyt Ming/John Hartford
18. Lonesome Valley - traditional
19. Angel Band - Arrangement by Ralph Stanley

So, basically, some research needs to done on some to determine if the arrangements are copyrighted (I would believe they would be). I would concentrate on making my own arrangements of any I wanted to do, to avoid the legalities.
I would also research any that are "written by" to determine a possible copyright date - I know Jimmie Rodgers stuff is suspect, I think he was late 20's on.

Incidently, you must get the CD, and see the movie!

Thanks Richard

Dean didn't mention we did our first gig today. I think we did video, and maybe we can get a link to it up here on EZfolk in the near future. It was sure fun, but, man o man we were nervous. Went away after the first song though. Practice at Dean's house is way different than doing it in front of a real audience. What a blast!

Thanks Richard!

Yep, we got video today, we just have to figure out how to convert it...Cmac borrowed the cam, but doesn't have any software for it...so it might be awhile.

Today was a BLAST! I hope to get some pictures up tonight. My wife got us our first gig at the Goodwill employee appreciation Labor Day party. We were supposed to do a half hour...when it was over we had played for 45 minutes did 9 songs...had em clapping and whoopin it up and dancing! The nerves leading up to the show were way worse than when it actually started...and like Tim said, they were gone by the time the first song was through. Man it was cool...when the first song was done and the crowd was cheerin and clappin...man it was like LET'S JAM...I can't wait to do it again!:2banjo::2band2::guitar1:

Thanks James! I still remember when Tim first showed me that song, writtian on a piece of scratch paper...it took my breath away. I think we mentioned it before, but it's worth mentioning it again, the song is dedicated to his two boys, both in the Marines. One just got back from his second tour in Iraq. It's may favorite one to play, and I'll bet the guys agree.

Richard,
That's an awesome rendition of Constant Sorrow. You totally threw me off with the tone of the opening lyrics - not what I expected at all - but it makes for a great alternative vocal style - plus the music is outstanding.

I uploaded my own take on the song as well - just basic guitar and vocals. The biggest changes I made to the song is that I slowed it down and sing six verses (which is what the original Burnett version of the song had) in stead of the 5-verse version the "Soggy" band did in the movie "O Brother". I took the Burnett lyrics and the Soggy lyrics, and sort of mixed them up and then revised with my own words, bringing the focus of the song north to upstate NY.

Best,
Joe
