Hi Clyde,  A few inches from here I posted seeing an odd band. Then I  saw your thread. Two of the guys I saw were playing this instrument. Only it seemed bigger. Do they come in sizes, like a violin/viola?

Members of the Chinese fiddle family (huqin) larger than the zhonghu have not proven to be very successful and have  for the most part been abandoned in Chinese orchestras. Only when purely Chinese instruments are strictly required is a gehu or da gehu used. The cello and double bass viol are used in most cases.

I have a zhonghu and find it to be a lot of fun to play. A dahu, a little larger than a zhonghu, that I played on several years ago was much less enjoyable in terms of tone and response. Of course, this may have been due either to my lack of familiarity with the low instrument or its quality. The fact remains though that they are not very popular compared with the much more successful erhu and gaohu, and even zhonghu.

Best wishes,

David

I'm thinking of getting a Zhonghu but only if it is possible to learn from home, from books,cd's or dvd's. Can you help me out with a website or anything?

If you are comfortable playing an erhu, a zhonghu will not be too much of an adjustment. Whatever you can learn on the erhu is applicable to the zhonghu. I have not found anything in English specific to the zhonghu, and very little useful self-learning material for the erhu that I can highly recommend. Both really require a teacher. Even if you can travel to a larger city to snag one or two lessons, that will be very helpful.

Best wishes,

David

You should master the erhu first and naturally you will know how to play any other huqin family instruments. However, playing zhonghu or gaohu needs to change the fingering by playing the fingering of 4 notes down eg. A to E or G to D. However, gaohu is positioned by using your thighs to cover the bottom half of the sound box. Actually there isnt much solo pieces for zhonghu as it is more widely used as accompanying instrument as compared to erhu. Only the better ones are able to play gaohu and zhonghu in the ensemble ^^

Isn't a zhonghu a good option for playing Er Quan Ying Yue? I mean, most players will use heavier strings on an erhu and tune it down quite a ways. But a zhonghu is already there.

Best wishes,

David

no zhonghu is not used to play er quan ying yue. erhu but with a special er quan string is used to play that~. although it is the same tune with zhonghu but er hu and zhonghu has different sound. zhonghu has few solo pieces i suggest u go get the scores of cao yuan shang or su wu. i play zhonghu in the orchestra and is relatively more difficult to play because of thicker strings so more strange sounds

Do you find playing the Guangdong style gaohu between the knees uncomfortable? I see that there are some versions with a base for playing in erhu position. I want to have the control of sound that Guangdong style allows, but playing in erhu position would be more familiar.

Best wishes,

David
