Hobo’s Lullaby – #Ukulele Travis Picking with Chords and Lyrics

Goebel Reeves wrote and recorded this song in 1936. He set his lyrics to the melody of the Civil War song, “After the Battle Mother.” It has become a standard among the folk music crowd and has been recorded by many including Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Woody Guthrie, and Emmylou Harris among others.

I played it as a 3-chord song in the key of G with fingerstyle accompaniment.

This song uses “Travis Picking” fingerstyle accompaniment on the ukulele. Many of my songs use the same technique and it’s simple once you get the hang of it, although it may take quite a bit of practicing it slowly to master it.

The first three example patterns on my fingerstyle tutorial show you how to play it. Here’s a link:

You’re My Best Friend – #Ukulele Travis Picking with Chords and Lyrics

“You’re My Best Friend” (not to be confused with the Queen song of the same name) was written by Wayland Holyfield and recorded by Don Williams in 1975. It went to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and was Williams’ second of his seventeen #1 songs.

I played it in the key of F, which suits my voice best, but it’s an easy 3-chord song and if you prefer a different key it’s easy to transpose. Instead of the key of F (F, Bb, C7) you can instead play the key of G (G, C, D7) or the key of C (C, F, G7).

Sunday Morning Coming Down – #Ukulele Travis Picking with Chords and Lyrics

Kris Kristofferson wrote “Sunday Morning Coming Down” and released it on his album, “Kristofferson,” but before his release it was recorded and released by Ray Stevens and reached the Top 100 on both the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart as well as the Hot 100. The biggest success for the song came for Johnny Cash in 1970 when his live version became a #1 single and won the Country Music Association award for Song of the Year.

I played it fingerstyle in the key of C.

Loving Her Was Easier – #Ukulele Travis Picking with Chords & Lyrics

“Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again)” was written and recorded by Kris Kristofferson in 1971.It reached as high as #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Since then it’s been recorded by many other artists including Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Roger Miller.

I played it in the key of C and the chord changes are really simple, so it’s a great song for beginners. If you’re a beginner, you can disregard the fingerpicking and just strum along. Sounds great either way.

It’s a Crazy World – #Ukulele Travis Picking with Chords and Lyrics

“It’s a Crazy World” was written by singer-songwriter Mac McAnally when he was just 16 years old. It wasn’t a huge hit although it did reach #37 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s been a favorite of mine since I heard Doc Watson’s version on his 1978 album, “Look Away.”
