Simple Gifts — Clawhammer Tablature

“Simple Gifts” is a Shaker hymn written in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett. The song emphasizes the values of simplicity, humility, and gratitude, which were central to Shaker beliefs. The lyrics encourage people to embrace a simple and honest life, free from material distractions, as a way to find true contentment and spiritual fulfillment. The song’s famous lines, “’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free,” reflect the idea that joy and freedom come from living with humility and in harmony with God’s will. Over time, Simple Gifts has been widely adapted and remains an enduring symbol of American folk music and Shaker heritage.

This is a tune I recorded as an MP3 in the early 2000s before the days of YouTube, so please pardon the old format that doesn’t have an actual video. It’s a good tune, though, and it sounds great played in the clawhammer style. I’m including several tablatures and will precede each with a description of what the tab contains.

If you need help with the tablature, please watch my video on “How to Read Tablature.”

The first tablature contains the chords, melody, and lyrics. It’s just what I’m singing on the recording. Note that we’re playing it in the key of F.

The next tablature is in the clawhammer style, as I played it in the recording.

The final tab is an easy chord melody solo. It’s not on the recording but it’s an alternative way to play the song if you’re interested.
